Sun, sand and surf are the obvious ways to spend free hours. If you’re staying at the Ocean Colony, just grab a towel and walk to the beach. There’s a lot to see & do while on the East End of Long Island. The weather in September can be spectacular but it always gets cold at night - so please come prepared.

Here are some of our favorite spots – there’s no shortage of good options for food. Most things are gourmet in the area, with gourmet pricing…

Breakfast
Closest Good Breakfast - Estia’s Restaurant – Amagansett
For Diner Food - John’s Pancake House in Montauk
Best donuts in the world – Dreesens on Newtown Lane in East Hampton.

Bagels!!!
Closest bagel shop to Ocean Dunes: Hampton Bagels on Main St in East Hampton….but the bagels at Twice Upon a Bagel in Wainscott OR Bagel Buoy in Sag Harbor are better.

Coffee
There is a Starbucks – in East Hampton on Main Street but the best coffee in the area is in Sag Harbor at Java Nation. There is also The Golden Pear in East Hampton & Bridgehampton.

Lunch
We are in walking distance to 2 classic fish houses:
Lunch, aka The Lobster Roll (just West of The OC on the same side of the highway)

The Clam Bar (just East of the OC on the othe side of the highway) where you can get awesome Lobster Rolls, steamed shellfish, hot dogs, cold beer.

Yummy Indian/Dosas
Hampton Chutney Company – in Amagansett – not to be missed. You can also get breakfast dosas. A dosa is a rice crepe filled with savory treats.

Vegetarian
Babette’s Restaurant on Newtown Lane in East Hampton – Most of Rachel’s friends worked there and it was a college years hang out.

Pizza
A slice of Pizza at any of the pizza parlor’s is great, but our favorite is Conco D’Oro in Sag Harbor on Main Street.
Astro’s in Amagansett is good.

Brent’s Deli in Amagansett just west of the village on Montauk Hwy is a classic NY deli with good sandwiches for the beach.
Rainy Day burgers and mussels

Rowdy Hall tucked away in an alley off Main Street, across from Newtown Lane in East Hampton. (631) 324-8555

Dinner
American - Contemporary
Our friend owns this great waterfront restaurant, Sunset Saloon 16 Navy Road in Montauk.

For a special dinner out in a historic location - The 1770 House - Rachel worked with the head chef there for years and the inn used to be in the family. Very Fancy. Reservations.

For an AMAZING sunset and family-style fresh, local food, you can’t beat The Harvest Restaurant in Montauk. 11 South Emery Street. (631) 668-5574 Reservations.

Asian
Upscale Asian can be found at Pacific East in Amagansett. Expensive. 450 Main Street. (631) 267-7770

Bamboo Restaurant & Sushi Lounge is a fun sushi restaurant in East Hampton on Montauk Hwy between the village of East Hampton & Wainscott. (631) 329-9821

If you find yourself near Water Mill, check out our favorite sushi restaurant, Suki Zuki – sooo yummy. 668 Montauk Highway 631-726-4600

Italian
Sam’s Restaurant is an old-school institution with home-style Italian-American cooking. Their thin crust pizzas are unique & yummy. On Newtown Lane in East Hampton.

Cittanuova is a good European-Italian restaurant. 29 Newtown Lane East Hampton

BBQ
Turtle Crossing is a low key Southwestern / BBQ spot between East Hampton & Amagansett on Montauk Hwy. (631) 324-7166

Mexican

Blue Parrot is a tiny Tex-Mex spot with good margaritas tucked away in an alley across from the movie theater on Main Street in East Hampton.

Grocery Stores
All the apartments at Ocean Colony have kitchens. The closest grocery store is the IGA, a few miles WEST, on your RIGHT HAND SIDE just before Amagansett.

Farmers Markets
There’s an amazing farmers market/cooperative in East Hampton EECO Farm. It’s across the street from Ioconno’s, a chicken farm that’s withstood the test of time. (Very family friendly places to check out.)

There are roadside farmstands all over the Hamptons– pickup some fresh local produce and fresh farm flowers for your apartment!

If anyone wants to organize a group outing, I’m sure a lot of folks will be game for an adventure. Our good friend, Captain Merritt White offers chartered fishing trips –a fun day or evening out on the water.

Here are some suggestions: rent kayaks, surf lessons, go to Montauk Point, and explore the un-Hamptons – you can nod to the famous Memory Motel on your way out of town

….hang out in Sag Harbor – an old whaling village with great shops, bar and beautiful bay beaches (great for kids.)

Horseback riding in Montauk
For art buffs, there is the Jackson Pollack House in Springs and The Parish Art Museum in Southampton.

The Stephen’s Talkhouse on Main Street in Amagansett is a live music bar & an institution in the Hamptons. Look no further for a rowdy night out not far from the hotel.

If you are in Sag Harbor, La Superica is great for margaritas, and Murph’s is a seedy old fisherman’s bar with a ring toss game.

There is a movie theater (where webmaster smiley worked as a kid) and a bowling alley in East Hampton – some of the few things that haven’t changed since Rachel was a kid.
